Within the subgroups of the Bigguns (Ralph allies / Jack allies) we have different characters that, in our opinion, move through the story in a more individualistic way. It will not be fair for us to say that they are in the shadow because this is not true. But, if we pay a closer attention to them, we can see that they are quite different to the rest. The best adjective we could apply to them is allegorical. It is true that the whole The Lord of the Flies is an allegory, a critique to society, a writing that makes us doubt if we are born good or bad or if it is the actual society the one who transforms us into bad or good beings. Inside this allegory, we have purer allegorical characters. For us, Ralph and Jack as the leaders of the subgroups are not part of this individualistic classification. They are the protagonists of the story. But we don’t think the same about the characters of Piggy, Simon and Roger. Piggy, as we have already mentioned before, is the best support for Ralph. He is a fat boy, with great values and admirable ideas. He is the voice of science, knowledge and intelligence. And he also is an idealist. Piggy ends up dead. He is a victim of the chaos and nonsense. It is very symbolic that the voice of intelligence ends up dead. This is a clearer evidence that the chaos is everywhere in the island.

In the purest sense of goodness, we have Simon. He is probably the best boy in the island. He takes care of Littluns and he believes what he does. This is very important since Ralph seems to act by moral obligations rather than true values. Simon is killed by the group of hunters, when they believe that he is the beast. The most important thing of this act is that Ralph and Piggy took part in Simon’s assassination. They were tempted and captivated by Jack tribal dances and rites. Here, it is clear that Ralph and Piggy drifted and the consequences were very negative. For us, in our society, we can interpret this message as if we don’t pay attention to the things and to the people that surround us, we can be in danger of losing us.

Simon represents the goodness, a goodness that is erased from the island when he dies. This is another symbol, another premonitory action that indicates that the chaos is arriving.

Finally, we could include here the character of Roger as the perfect antonym of Simon. Roger is part of the subgroup of the Hunters. Roger is Piggy’s assassin. Jack is not a good boy but what we are shown in the story is that Roger is even worse. He is attracted by death. This characteristic is what makes us think that he is different to the rest, like Simon. Both are different to the rest of people of their social strata and between them, they are complete opposites. The allegory of goodness and evil.
